Zach Braff’s acting and directing career is starting to get some attention, and well-deserved attention at that. The 25-year-old actor stars in Sony Pictures Classics' The Broken Hearts Club. The new film has received great reviews, and was the closing night film at both the New York and Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals this summer.

Set in the bustling gay Mecca of West Hollywood, the film follows a close knit group of 20 something friends as they face the trials and tribulations of the gay life. The posse is comprised of Benji, (Zach Braff) who is a loud and flirtatious party boy and has a thing for hunks; Dennis (Timothy Olyphant) who plays the boy always searching for the love of his life; Taylor (Billy Porter) who is a big believer is long term relationships, but will soon find his beliefs challenged; Patrick (Ben Weber) the very vulnerable one; Howie (Matt Mcgrath) a psychology student who is always giving relationship advice, yet needs some of his own and the delicious Cole (Dean Cain) who plays a stud like actor who gets whoever he wants - and let’s them go just as quick. Guiding the group along is the much older Jack (John Mahoney) who is the team’s baseball coach and somewhat mentor.

To take on the role of gay Benji, Braff had to get use to many gay customs. "I had to learn a lot about the gay life," admits Braff, who is straight in real life. "For example, I’m used to just saying goodbye to friends, but gay people tend to hug and kiss each other goodbye, so we were always practicing that in the rehearsals," says Braff. The young actor says that "is was a very fun role," and that he "thinks every actor should try it once."

The New Jersey native graduated from Northwestern Film School with intentions to become a director. It wasn’t until someone suggested to Braff that he should do an audition that he found himself liking the acting. Braff was soon performing in many plays including Manhattan Murder Mystery. One of his most memorable experiences was his performance in the popular student film Getting To Know You, which was directed and produced by Lisanne Skylers. The film received excellent reviews in 1999, when it was presented at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

Braff is currently directing an untitled film, and continues to audition for other projects as well. The bi-coastal actor (New York and Los Angeles) enjoys yoga, reading, and admits that he is somewhat of a health and workout nut. In any case, it won't be long before we see Braff among the ranks of the other young leading Hollywood talent.

The Broken Hearts Club is available on home video & DVD March 6, 2001 from Columbia TriStar.
